Lent - Day 18
For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; (2 Peter 2:4, ESV)
The Apostle Peter reminds us that not just judgement awaits, but punishment for the ungodly will happen and gives us a breakdown of the times when God acted justly. He talks about not sparing angels when they sinned.
This episode is not directly found in the Bible, but details are mentioned in the book of Enoch which was widely read during the early church period. In the Bible, we just get a brief passage about angels taking on human wives and producing offspring who were the heroes of old and also gave rise to the Nephilim.
When these angels sinned they were punished by God, and if God is willing to punish angels that sin then how much more are we as people subject to punishment if we deny Jesus and continue in sin. Therefore it is undoubtedly beneficial for us to all the more diligently confirm our calling and election by actively and intentionally pursuing maturity and growth in Jesus.
On a daily basis, we are either practicing wickedness by feeding our flesh and going about our own way, or we are practicing righteousness by walking step with the Holy Spirit.
How are you going to practice righteousness this week?
