Ash Wednesday
Simeon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ,
To those who have obtained a faith of equal standing with ours by the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: (2 Peter 1:1, ESV)
As we journey through the Lenten season, in today’s passage, the Apostle Peter makes an astonishing claim about us! We as regular believers have “obtained a faith of equal standing with” the Apostles!!!
It sounds preposterous and scandalous, but it is true. In our false humility, we dare not think we are even close to the level of faith with the Apostles, however it is true! This truth is not based on feelings and opinions, but solely on the gospel truth: “by the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ .”
We tend to regularly default into the worldly mindset of “my accomplishments” and what I bring to the table, however as followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to have the mind of Christ which is not one of comparison nor of self, but always looking toward the great love and mercy of the Father. Since we have one God and one Spirit, and one Lord, it can only be true that in and through Christ Jesus, we have been given and thus obtained a faith in equal standing as the Apostles.
Now do we exercise it? This is the true question at hand. Now that you know you have Apostolic faith, will you exercise it accordingly?
Starting today, take your eyes off of yourself and do not take your eyes off of Jesus. Speak what he speaks and do what he does and you cannot go wrong. Conform no longer to the patterns of this world and your life as you have lived it, but have the mind of Christ and seek to do the will of Him who sends you!
Therefore go now and make disciples…
