Lent Devotional - Day 1 (Ash Wednesday)

Read John 1:1-28

Jesus is the light of the world and he came into the world he created and we failed to recognize him. This season of Lent is meant to be a deliberate hard stop on how we usually do things to turn our hearts back to Jesus. The fact that the Jewish people have been waiting for the Messiah expectantly and yet have missed him while he was dwelling with them says a lot about the human condition.

How has your daily living and your thought patterns contributed to you missing out on God? Have you been living faithfully in close friendship with God or are you living the life you want hoping that God would continue to bless it?

Let’s take a slight pause and pray. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you the true condition of your heart and mind as it relates to God. Take this moment to repent and return to God.

John the Baptist clearly knew who he was and who he wasn’t. He knew he came to prepare the way for the Lord and he knew that he was not the Messiah. He was a man living out in the desert, eating locusts and honey. He was many things, but he was not delusional. In fact, he had such clarity of focus when it came to his mission and purpose, we would love to have half of understanding that he had.

Do you know who you are? Whose you are? Remember you are not God. You have no power or control when it comes to your life. It is only by the grace of God you live and have your being. It is only by the grace of God that you woke up today. Give God the glory and honour due him. Humble yourself before God and live in humility. Surrender your life to Jesus today and ask him to lead you and guide and reveal to you who you really are in Christ Jesus.

Let’s pray.
