Lent Devotional - Day 2
Read John 1:29-51
As Jesus’ ministry begins, we see the proto-church being formed through the calling of the disciples and all this happens through the sharing of testimonies. The testimonies are not long nor particularly stunning and elaborate, but John the Baptist kicks things off by declaring that Jesus is the Messiah, the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.
This causes two of John the Baptist’s disciples to follow Jesus. From there Andrew of the two calls his brother Simon, who Jesus renames Peter. Jesus calls Philip to follow him and Philip goes and tells Nathanael about Jesus.
What is your testimony about Jesus? Who are you telling to come and see?
As Christians, we might give ourselves fancy names like disciples of Jesus, ambassador for Christ, followers of Jesus, but apart from the labels, the very basic function is to simply tell others about your encounters and experiences with Jesus. A clear, direct invitation for others to check out Jesus and no lofty theological teachings needed.
Are you too busy? Are you too afraid? Ask Jesus to help you in these areas and ask the Holy Spirit to direct you. If we cannot simply tell others about Jesus, how will we heal the sick and raise the dead?
Perhaps many of us struggle in our spiritual life and in our walk with Jesus, not because God is unwilling, but we are unwilling. If Jesus is truly our Lord and Saviour, who can stop us and of what shall we be afraid?
